A website portrait, family session, wedding and product shoot require different skills. Ask to see a complete series from a similar job: it reveals consistency of lighting, colour and coverage better than a handful of highlights. Establish which examples were produced by the photographer you intend to book.

Describe the purpose, date, location, participant count and desired output. For an event, include key moments and the schedule; for a business, list subjects and intended publishing channels. Ask about video separately rather than assuming it is part of a photography package.

Make the package concrete

Compare attendance time, preparation, studio hire, travel and the number of delivered images. Discuss selection, the meaning of editing, retouching and the number of revisions. Request a delivery date and file-transfer method. A promise of all photographs leaves questions about curation and format unanswered.

An hourly rate, full-day package and price per product image describe different services. Ask for an estimate based on your actual brief and clarify extra time, transport, hire charges and cancellation or weather-related rescheduling.

Agree image use and publication

GOV.UK explains copyright protection. Agree the permitted uses before commissioning: personal posts, a business website, advertising, print and sharing with third parties may have different terms. Paying for the session does not answer every question about rights.

Discuss separately whether the photographer may publish the series in a portfolio, particularly where children or a private event are involved. Record consent and any restrictions in writing.

Plan the day itself

Name a contact at the venue, discuss access requirements and agree a backup plan and how delays are communicated. The directory helps you compare providers; the photographer confirms availability and the booking. A shared understanding of the deliverables is more useful than selecting only by a profile’s most striking image.
