Guide to this section

Start with the legal issue and jurisdiction

Family matters, employment disputes, commercial contracts and property transactions call for different experience. Prepare a short account of the issue and identify the jurisdiction involved. Russian-language communication can make a conversation easier, but the practitioner’s experience in the relevant legal system matters too.

Compare practice areas, the place of work and appointment options shown in each profile. For a visa or immigration-status question, also consider immigration advisers. Avoid placing documents, identifying information about other parties or confidential correspondence in a public request.

Establish the practitioner’s actual role

Ask who will handle the work, their precise professional title and the firm they work through. For a solicitor in England and Wales, use the SRA Solicitors Register to check the person and practice. Match the entry to the service offered rather than relying on a familiar name.

For another title or jurisdiction, ask which professional body oversees that role and where its official register is available. A SARAFAN listing does not mean that every legal professional is a solicitor or that the platform guarantees the outcome of a case.

Define the first appointment and subsequent work

Confirm the meeting length, whether written advice is included and which documents the practitioner needs to assess the issue. Establish whether drafting, negotiation, correspondence and representation are included or separately commissioned. Discuss potential conflicts of interest before sharing the full case history.

Understand the estimate

For hourly work, agree the rate, time-recording approach and a spending limit that requires further approval. For a fixed fee, list the stages and exclusions. Ask about taxes, official charges and third-party expenses separately. An outcome promise is not a substitute for a clear engagement and an explanation of risks; the strategy for your circumstances belongs in an individual consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Does an initial consultation include handling the case?

Not automatically. Agree the written output and included steps; drafting, representation and follow-up correspondence may be separate services.

Is every listed legal professional a solicitor?

No. Ask for the exact professional title and jurisdiction. Check a claimed solicitor status in England and Wales against the SRA register for both the individual and firm.
