Guide to this section
A one-off Self Assessment return, company bookkeeping and payroll are different assignments. Look for experience with your type of activity and a clear list of services in the profile. Explain whether you need ongoing support, a single submission or help organising records from earlier periods.
Write down the income categories, software you use and the deadline you are working towards. HMRC explains Self Assessment; discuss how the requirements apply to you with your chosen adviser. A directory description is not enough to establish your tax position.
Request a written breakdown covering preparation, submission, checking the records supplied, correspondence and corrections. Ask who approves a return before it is sent and how you receive confirmation of submission. A starting price needs an explanation of the circumstances that increase it.
For recurring support, establish the transaction volume, number of employees and reports included. Discuss backlog work, software charges and the handover of records if you change provider. A monthly package and a single return should only be compared after their deliverables are clear.
When an accountant states ICAEW membership, match the person and practice against ICAEW’s directory. It covers that membership, not every UK accountant. Ask about the qualifications listed and examples of comparable work. Read each SARAFAN label for the fact it actually confirms; appearing in the catalogue does not itself establish professional standing.
Agree a secure way to exchange records, permissions for accounting software and who keeps the originals. Keep statements, tax identifiers and customer documents out of public requests. Confirm milestones, response times and how additional work will be approved before the engagement starts.
Describe your business structure, the accounting period and the nearest deadline. Agree a document checklist and a secure transfer method before sending statements.
