Guide to this section

State the instrument and learning goal

Starting from scratch, returning after a break, developing singing skills and preparing for a performance are different assignments. Describe the learner’s age, instrument, experience and desired outcome. Ask the teacher to explain the first stages rather than promise the same pace of progress for everyone.

Look for the instrument and age groups taught in the profile. Establish whether lessons focus on repertoire, technique, theory or a particular examination. For exam preparation, name the programme and level so that you can compare relevant teaching experience.

Understand the plan and practice between lessons

Ask how the starting level is assessed and progress reviewed. Discuss expected home practice, required materials and whether their cost is included. Without an instrument, establish what is available for an initial lesson and what a later purchase or rental would need to provide.

A trial lesson can help you assess the explanation style and rapport with the learner. Ask whether it is paid and how it differs from a regular appointment. Qualifications, performance experience and experience teaching the learner’s age group are different evidence; request an explanation of each claim.

Agree arrangements for children

ISM’s guidance for remote music teaching discusses safeguarding and online lesson arrangements. Talk about parental presence, the communication channel, recording and contact between lessons. For in-person tuition, establish the venue, parental access and responsible adult.

If a teacher states that they have a DBS check, ask about its type, date and relevance to the work offered. A check alone is not an assessment of teaching ability or a guarantee of safety. Publication of a SARAFAN profile does not itself confer that status.

Compare the complete lesson cost

Confirm duration, individual or group format, group size, materials and travel charges. Agree the schedule and terms for missed lessons, rescheduling and ending a package. An hourly price is only comparable to a per-lesson price once these details are clear. The teacher confirms a timetable place after discussing the arrangements with you.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy an instrument before the first lesson?

Discuss instrument requirements and home practice with the teacher first. Ask about a trial lesson and whether an instrument is available during it.

Why is a lesson fee different from an hourly rate?

Lessons vary in length and may be individual or group sessions. Compare duration, format, materials and missed-lesson terms before choosing.
